Incoming Agriculture Minister wants 9 pc VAT for bakery industry

Agriculture Minister-designate Daniel Constantin stated that lowering the VAT in the bakery industry, where tax evasion registers a level of 60 per cent, would bring to the light hundreds of millions of euros that are needed for improving the agricultural sector and for making other investments, Mediafax informs. “The proposal to cut the VAT to 9 per cent in the case of staple foodstuffs is a commitment discussed for a very long time and it remains for us to decide with the Finance Ministry when we will introduce this measure. I wanted to give an example this year, even though we are under the pressure of respecting the deficit target, to give towards the end of this year an example in the panification sector,” Constantin said.

VERONAFIERE SIGNS AN AGREEMENT WITH RUSSIAN BAKERS

ITALY: WORLD LEADER FOR BAKERY MACHINERY

 

The agreement between VeronaFiere, the Russian Association of bakers and pastry-confectioners and Conoscere Eurasia was signed yesterday in Moscow during the II Italo-Russian Bakery Forum. CEO & Director General Giovanni Mantovani:  "We aim to promote the sector through exports to Russia of Made in Italy products and technologies but also to support growth of bread, pastry and related products in terms of know how." Bakery products in Russia are worth 10.2 billion euros and growth of 10-12% is envisaged in 2012. Italian exports of machinery and technologies for bakery, pastry, confectionery, pasta and pizza in 2011 came to more than 36.4 million euros.

The FAO Food Price Index in March nearly unchanged from February

The FAO Food Price Index (FFPI) averaged 216 points in March 2012, virtually unchanged from 215 points in February. Among the various commodity groups, only oils prices showed strength, compensating for falling dairy quotations, while the indices of cereals, sugar and meat prices were largely unchanged from last month’s level.

Flour Millers Fined $317 Million by French Antitrust Authority

France’s competition regulator fined French and German flour millers about 242 million euros ($317 million) for anticompetitive practices in the retail market, according to Bloomberg. A 14-member Franco-German cartel was fined 95.5 million euros for conspiring between 2002 and 2008 to limit flour exports between the two countries.

SIGEP 2012 exceeds itself, once again chalking up an extraordinary success with record-breaking figures. After having passing the threshold of 100,000 trade visitors in 2011, the 33rd edition that ended yesterday at Rimini Fiera was attended by a total of 122,697 visitors over five exhibiting days, with an increase of 15% on 2011.

EU Forecasts 2012 Wheat Harvest to Rise 2% to 131.4 Million Tons

The European Union soft-wheat harvest will rise 2 percent this year, with ending stocks forecast to climb on lower use of the grain as animal feed, according to the European Commission. Soft-wheat production in the 27-nation bloc may rise to 131.4 million metric tons from 128.8 million metric tons last year, according to documents dated March 30 and published on the commission’s website.
